We feel very proud to contribute over 30 pairs of pajamas and many beautiful hardcover children’s books to the Pajama Program this year.   Pajama Program will distribute these cozy pjs and books to children in orphanages, group homes and shelters.  A special thank you to all who contributed to our Pajama Drive!

Fall Pinto Bean and Yam Soup

Another great recipe from Maggie Christopher, holistic nutrition counselor!

This soup is a celebration of the flavors of autumn and the abundant harvest that this season has to offer. If you don’t want to cook your own beans, simply use 3 cans of organic beans. You will be delighted at the flavor of this soup.

Serves 8-10

Ingredients:

2 cups dry pinto beans, soaked overnight

6 to 8 cups water

4 cloves garlic, peeled

One 2-inch piece kombu seaweed

2 TBS unrefined olive oil

1 large onion, chopped

5 cloves garlic, crushed

1 to 2 jalapeno peppers, seeded and chopped

2 small yams, peeled and diced

3 carrots, cut into rounds

1 TBS ground cumin

1 tsp paprika

½ tsp chipotle chili powder

8 cups bean cooking liquid and/or water

One 28-ounce can diced fire roasted tomatoes

2 to 3 ears of fresh corn, cut off the cob (or 1.5 cups of frozen, organic corn)

1 small bunch of kale, finely chopped

1 cup chopped cilantro

½ lime, juiced

2 to 3 tsp sea salt or Herbamare

Point of the Season

Lung 7,  列缺, (Lieque)

Since we are in the season of fall, and the fall season is associated with the lungs in Traditional Chinese Medicine, we thought you may like to learn a little more about one of the more important points on the lung meridian.

Lung 7  is located above the wrist on the inside of the arm.  Find it by interlocking your thumb and index finger of one hand with the other.   The point is located at the end of the index finger in a depression.

This is a great and powerful point, used to strengthen the lung, stop coughing, and treat the first signs of a cold. It strengthens your bodies ‘defensive’ qi, which could loosely be related to your immune system.  In addition, Lung 7 is the ‘command point’ for the head and neck, able to treat conditions related to the head and neck such as headache, stiff neck, facial paralysis, or toothache.

Autumn & Chinese Medicine

The days are starting to get a little shorter, the air crisp and cooler.  Autumn has come.  While many use this time to start mourning the end of summer, winter is not here yet and fall is a wonderful time of year.

In Chinese medicine we often speak of how our internal environment is reflected and responds to our external environment. When the season starts to change you may notice a change in your own energy as well. Autumn is a time where the energy of the earth starts to turn inward. After putting forth all effort to grow and expand, to create and collect energy, now is a time to begin storage of that energy.  As the energy of the earth prepares to enter winter, so do our own bodies.  Many people start feeling the desire to slow down a bit more, wanting to go to bed earlier and sleep in later.  We start craving warmer foods, soups and stews.
